You may have already seen the video below – Sergei Polunin first came into my field of vision a few years ago when I first saw his performance to Hoziers hit Take me to Church. If you’ve never seen it, make sure you watch the clip below. It’s been watched over 22 million times on Youtube alone. Even someone who knows nothing of dance can see the superhuman brilliance of the lifts and jumps, but it’s the visceral thumping emotion in it that holds your eyes locked to the screen.
Dancer is the 2016 independent film about the young man in the clip; Sergei Polunin. It’s an incredible tale about a young boy from a poor housing estate in the Ukraine whose family sacrificed everything, including their ability to be physcially present in his life, to push him to excellence in the elite ballet schools of the world.
Acclaimed as a prodigy, Sergei became the youngest ever principal for the Royal Ballet, but his fame came to him so young and fast, it nearly broke him.
There is breathtaking artistry to be seen in this film, set against an all too familiar and sad tale of family breakdown. Its a fascinating and inspirational watch.
